To Close or Not to Close

Downtown Bozeman Association’s (DBA) own Ellie Staley was quoted in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle about closing down Main Street. She had this to say, “(Downtown Bozeman wants) to add the 11-year-old Cruisin’ on Main car show, which draws 5,000 people, and MSU’s pep rallies and Bobcat Fest on Main, which aren’t as large but are a good way to build town-gown relationships and are held after most downtown businesses close for the day.”

What does this all pertain to?

The City of Bozeman is having a hard time deciding between which events do or do not warrant a Main Street closure. The costs are adding up, the complaints are piling and the traffic is being jammed on this two-lane street deemed a state highway.

Some of the more prominent events such as DBAs own Music on Main summer concert series and the Bozeman staple, The Sweetpea Festival, as well as many others are going to be able to continue to get an approval on the closure, but newer, smaller events are going to have a tougher time getting approvals as more and more small businesses say that it hurts their business to have Main Street closed for any amount of time.
